Murviedro makes a big impact at the Bacchus awards with the Grand Gold for Vallejo Avenas Chardonnay and three Golds for La Casa de la Seda, Murviedro Pasión Garnacha Rosé and Galeam Dry Muscat Organic Wine
Requena, 5 May 2023.- The Spanish Wine-Tasters Union has recognised Vallejo Avenas, from Murviedro, as one of the best Chardonnays in Spain, giving it the highest award in blind tasting, the Grand Gold, in the
International Bacchus Competition.
Vallejo Avenas (DO Utiel-Requena) is part of Murviedro’s select range of Vinos de Parcela (single-vineyard wines). The grapes come from a single Chardonnay vineyard the winery owns in the Venta del Moro district, at an altitude of 740 metres. The land is on a limestone plateau very poor in organic matter and with great vine-growing potential. Its particular feature is the superimposition of limestone layers, red clayey marls and fine sandstone formed in the Tertiary era. These are partly responsible for the personality of this great white wine.
2021 was a very good vintage, with the rain well distributed throughout the seasons and a summer without excessive heat. Ripening was so good that it was decided to bring the harvest forward a little, and this was a complete success.
In the wine-making process, the grapes undergo a very soft pressing and the must ferments spontaneously with wild yeasts in 500-litre French oak barrels, where it continues to age.
Vallejo Avenas Chardonnay 2021 stands out for its freshness and minerality. A fruity sensation predominates, with citrus and mango, and there is a very good balance between the fruit and the oak from its ageing. The wine is fresh and silky in the mouth, with a certain smoothness, good acidity, structure and balance, leading to a long saline and mineral finish.
La Casa de la Seda, Murviedro Pasión Garnacha Rosé and Galeam Dry Muscat Organic Wine, Gold Medals in the Bacchus
This historic award accompanies the Gold Medal for La Casa de la Seda 2021 (DO Utiel-Requena), made with Bobal from the hundred-year-old vineyard on the El Ardal estate, which is aged in the Murviedro Historic Winery in the old town of La Villa de Requena. There it rests, in equal parts, in a French oak foudre, a 37-arroba clay jar and an ovoid concrete tank. There, too, valuable natural silk thread was once woven to make fabrics that inspired the wine label.
Murviedro Pasión Garnacha Rosé 2022, an evocative rosé wine made from organically grown Garnacha grapes, has also won a Gold Medal. It has an enveloping fruity aroma, with intense red fruit and lactic notes. Fresh on the palate, the wine’s balanced acidity makes it very pleasant to drink. It is the ideal accompaniment to pasta and rice dishes, poultry and Asian food.
Galeam Dry Muscat Organic Wine 2022, (PDO Alicante) also received a well-deserved Gold Medal for being an aromatic and highly complex white wine with a wide range of exotic fruit aromas (lychees, passion fruit, and others), floral nuances and light mineral notes. It is tasty, enveloping, fresh and with good persistence. The wine is perfect to accompany fish stews, fideuà, paellas, shellfish and white meats and it is also an excellent appetiser.
