The Murviedro Historic Winery is opening a new wine shop

Nueva tienda Murviedro

In this new space you will find the great variety of wines produced by Murviedro, together with Swiss, French and Italian wines from the Schenk Group, making a total of more than 50 references. You can also taste wines by the glass, and themed tastings are organised.

Murviedro is expanding the cultural and wine tourism facilities offered by its Historic Winery with a new wine shop. The new store is designed to delight anyone with a passion for the drink most closely associated with culture and sensual pleasure.

The official opening, which took place last Friday in the iconic Plaza de Albornoz in La Villa de Requena, was presided over by Marc Grin, Managing Director of Bodegas Murviedro, and was attended by David Torres García, Director General of Rural Development at the regional Department of Agriculture; Mario Sánchez González, the Mayor of Requena; and François Schenk representing the Schenk Group.

In the shop at Murviedro’s Historic Winery, you can find broad palette of wines produced by this Valencian winemaker, from the exclusive La Casa de la Seda to the elite Vinos de Parcela (Single-Vineyard Wines), together with the well-known Sericis, Pugnus, Audentia and Galeam ranges, the select Murviedro Collection and its renowned cavas and sparkling wines.

There are also the Vinos de Paraje (Estate Wines) from Casa Lo Alto, with its Rocha, made from Garnacha; Trena, the white made with Tardana grapes; and Manzán, made from Bobal. In just a few vintages, these three wines have developed into something of a cult among our most knowledgeable consumers.

The international section is completed by the wines that the Schenk Group produces in the Cantons of Valais, La Côte and Geneva, in Switzerland; as well as a selection of reds and whites from Bordeaux, Burgundy, Champagne and Beaujolais, in France; and wines from some of the most prestigious vine-growing areas in Italy including Tuscany, Piedmont and Sicily.

As well as being able buy bottles of more than 50 wines, you can also taste some of them by the glass. Themed tastings are also organised to improve customers’ knowledge of different grape varieties and regions.

The shop is staffed by highly specialised personnel: professionals who know how to advise you when buying wine so you can surprise your friends or family with an exceptional choice.

Wine heritage at the Murviedro Historic Winery

This project is based on a house-museum with a fascinating underground area concealed beneath it. Under its foundations is a network of galleries which, over time, has served as a store for water and food and as a refuge, as well as for making the wines that have made the Valencian region of Requena y Utiel famous since the 6th century BC.

Bodegas Murviedro opened the Historic Winery to mark its 90th anniversary in 2017, after meticulous renovation work. On the upper floors of the building, the history of the La Villa district and its relationship with vine-growing and wine production are illustrated where silk-weaving looms once stood. During the 17th century, this was one of the focal points of the Silk Route, as Requena became the fourth largest producer of these luxurious fabrics in Spain.

The Historic Winery receives around 700 visits a month, so we have limited the number of people who visit us annually to 10,000. “But the most remarkable thing,” said Marc Grin, “is the development in the quality of wine tourists choosing the most complete option – the Premium – which accounts for 80% of bookings. The groups are small, of up to 12 people, to offer our visitors the attention they deserve, allowing us to address them by name.”

“The important thing for us is not to battle to get large numbers of visitors,” continued Grin. “We want small groups of people so we can enjoy and learn from each of them and share with them our passion for wine and our history.”

As a detail, it should be noted that, even if visitors are experts in wine or wine tourism and have visited many wineries, they are always impressed with what this Historic Winery includes: its caves, the tradition of silk weaving in the building and the three different traditional ageing methods used here to make La Casa de la Seda.

La Casa de la Seda, wine from hundred-year-old vines

Murviedro’s flagship wine, La Casa de la Seda, is aged on the ground floor of the Historic Winery. This wine is special because it is made with grapes from hundred-year-old vines on El Ardal estate which Murviedro saved from being ripped up when it bought the vineyards in 2015. Grapes from there are used to make artisanal red wine in the old-fashioned way.

All this makes the Murviedro Historic Winery the perfect place to visit on a break with your partner, family or friends, after a walk through the narrow medieval streets in Requena’s fortified La Villa district.
