La Casa de la Seda, an iconic wine by Bodegas Murviedro, has been recognised as the Best New Wine of 2018 in the Verema Awards.

Valencia, 25th de February, 2019.- La Casa de la Seda is a red wine produced from a single plot with Bobal grapes from the El Ardal estate in Requena. Bodegas Murviedro acquired and salvaged this nearly century-old vineyard, which was planted in 1923, when it was about to be pulled up due to its low production, despite the fact that its bunches are very concentrated. This authentic winemaking heritage is maintained through traditional organic and biodynamic viticulture methods.

This first harvest of 2016 was produced in three types of traditional deposits, which refine its fruit and terroir without masking it. The wine was left to settle divided almost equally between a French oak cask, a large 37 arroba clay jar and an ovoid-shaped concrete tank in the historic Murviedro Winery in the old town of the city of Requena, where natural silk was also produced and warped, and whose fabric inspired the name of the wine.

La Casa de la Seda 2016 is a beautiful purple colour, a result of the Bobal grape. Its varietal aroma of black fruits and wild berries dominates, with hints of aromatic plants, violets and spices such as saffron. On the palate, it is medium-bodied and sweet, with silky tannins, a full richness and ripe fruit. It is balanced with an excellent acidity and a fresh and mineral feel. The overwhelming approval it has had from discerning consumers comes as no surprise.

11,600 people participated in the 2018 Verema Awards. They voted for the wines they liked most and the celebrities from the world of wine, wineries and entities that, in each of their areas, stood out this year. The Best New Wine award of 2018 will be presented on Thursday 21st February at 19:00 at Hotel Balneario Las Arenas during the Experiencia Verema 2019 celebration in Valencia.

Many thanks to all of those who made this possible!

This award is one of several already won by La Casa de la Seda 2016, PDO Utiel-Requena, such as the Silver Medal in the AWC Vienna 2018 (Austria) and Bronze Medal in the Japan Wine Challenge 2018 (Japan).
