Cueva de la Culpa and Cepas Viejas in the roll of honour for the wines from the Comunidad Valenciana with the highest scores in the guide ‘Guía Repsol’.
Valencia 19 January 2017 – The guide ‘Guía Repsol’ as well as the publications ABC and ‘Vivir el Vino’, award Cueva de la Culpa 2012 and Murviedro Cepas Viejas winery’s highest scores. Murviedro Cepas Viejas 2013 and Cueva de la Culpa 2012, with 91 points and 93 points respectively, enter into the roll of honour of the Spanish wines with the highest scores, in accordance with the scores in the ´Guía Repsol´. Both reflect the winery’s belief giving an indigenous grape variety a place on the podium of the great wines.
Cueva de la Culpa 2012 is a wine from the D.O. Utiel-Requena, is made from carefully selected Bobal and Merlot grapes, from the oldest vineyards. In 2014 it was considered the ‘Best Wine in Spain’, by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment. Its quality has resulted in it winning awards both nationally and internationally. This year there have been 4 gold medals at Asia Wine Trophy, Mundus Vini, Berliner Wein Trophy and the Concurso Internacional Gilbert&Gaillard. A silver medal at the Concurso Mundial de Bruselas and a bronze medal at the Japan Wine Challenge as well as a being named the best red wine from the DOP UR by the ASVASU.
Similarly, Murviedro Cepas Viejas 2013, made from the emblematic single variety Bobal, this year has accumulated 4 gold medals at the Asia Wine Trophy, China Wine&Spirits Awards, Berliner Wine Trophy and Catavinum World Wine&Spirits Competition as well as a Bacchus de Oro at the Concurso Internacional de Vinos Bacchus 2016.
These together with other awards have resulted in Bodegas Murviedro maintaining their position in the World Ranking of the World Association of Writers and Journalists of Wines & Spirits, placing them among the best 12 wineries in Spain (11th place) and among the top 100 wineries in the world (61st place). In the words of Marc Grin, Managing Director of Bodegas Murviedro, “this placement is a guarantee of the quality of our wines and confirms that our decisions were correct; in the same way that our commitment to recover and put indigenous varieties where they deserve to be forming a part of a strategy that will continue to be worked on and strengthened”.
Murviedro is a subsidiary of the Schenk Group, a major wine producer dating back to 1927, very well known internationally in the wine industry as they produce and sell more than 200 million bottles per year. The quality of the wines from Murviedro has resulted in the winery being ranked among the top 15 best Spanish wineries in the world rankings of the World Association, Wines & Spirits, Writers and Journalists (WAWWJ), as a result of the medals and awards won by their wines in the main international wine competitions. 90% of their wines are exported, the key markets being the UK, Switzerland, Germany, Benelux, Scandinavia and Japan, while the winery continues to pursue its objective to grow its presence in the national market.
